Chronic Absenteeism
December 6, 2024

As a school, we are committed to supporting all students and helping them thrive. We understand there are many reasons why a child may miss school, including illness, family needs, or other challenges. However, chronic absenteeism can have serious long-term effects on a child's education and well-being. Currently, 40% of students at Hudson Park Elementary are chronically absent.  This means almost half of our students are chronically absent from school. Chronic absenteeism is defined as missing 10% or more of the school year, or to date, 6 or more days of school.

What You Can Do to Help Build the Habit of Good Attendance

  • Set a regular bedtime and morning routine.
  • Lay out clothes and pack backpacks the night before.
  • Keep your student healthy by encouraging a balanced diet, ensuring they drink enough water, prioritizing regular physical activity, getting adequate sleep, managing stress levels, practicing good hygiene, and promoting regular check-ups with a healthcare provider; also, limit screen time and sugary drinks.
  • Develop backup plans for getting to school if something comes up. Call on a family member, a neighbor, or another parent.
  • Try to schedule non-urgent related medical appointments and extended trips when school isn’t in session.
  • If your student seems anxious about going to school, talk to their teacher or the school counselor for advice on how to make your student feel comfortable and excited about learning.
  • If you are concerned that your student may have a contagious illness, notify the school and call your healthcare provider for advice.
  • If your student must stay home due to illness, please call the office to excuse them and contact the teacher to request the work that was missed.
Thank you for your support as we work together to help each student succeed in school.
